Blue Sapphire - Gemology and Buying Guide
(c)Copyright 2009, CaratExchange.com
Gemology and Color: Blue is the most well known color of sapphire. Sapphire belongs to the corundum group, the members of which are characterized by their excellent hardness. For blue sapphires, the intensity of blue as the most important value factor. The most prized colors are intense, rich blues that are not dark or inky.
Sources: Most sapphires come from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania and Australia. The United States, Cambodia, Nigeria, Kenya and China also produce some sapphires in smaller quantities. Some of the most famous sources for sapphires are the Kashmir region of India, and Burma however production of stones from these areas is becoming more limited.
Treatments and Care: The most common treatment for sapphire is heat treatment. Some blue sapphires may also be diffusion treated, though this treatment is more common for star sapphires. Beryllium treatment is now being used to produce stunning orange and red colors which were once rarely seen. Thanks to their hardness, sapphires are easy to look after, requiring no more than the usual care on the part of the wearer. Clean with mild dish soap: use a toothbrush to scrub behind the stone where dust can collect.
Buying Guide: Like diamonds, sapphires are graded on color, cut, clarity and carat weight. The ideal color for sapphire is a rich, medium tone of its primary shade - for example, blue with no hint of green or red. Pale blue sapphires that have no overtones of other colors also rate high on the grading scale for gems. Because of the wide variety of sapphires available, describing the grading process would take nearly a book. The most important factor in choosing a quality sapphire is in finding one that is attractive to your eye.

I need some help with 8th grade science hw...really easy?
hi im in 8th grade earth science and we are working on a lab about pangea and the continental drift. I have about 5 questions to answer and i just want a bit of help please no rude comments so here they are:
What characteristics should a plant or animal have in order to surviv gradual seperation of continents?
There are mesosauras fossils on south america and south africa. EVen though we knew this animal could swim, does the presence of mesosauras fossils support wegners and dutroit's theory?
Do u think the breakup of pangea durring the jurassic period led to extinction of some dinosaurs and why?
Glossopteris lived in india antartica, austrailia, and madagascar-what does it tell u about Glossopteris and the enviroment of gondwanaland?
we can assume that earth is always changing- what modern day evidence supports this idea?
